This is the eighth time Sheikh Hasina, the running prime minister of Bangladesh, has been elected as the head of Awami League – this time despite her hints for retirement.

Veteran Awami League leader Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury proposed Hasina’s name for president, which was accepted unanimously. Hasina is viewed as the “main asset” in the party.

Sheikh Hasina has been hinting of retiring. Even today, during addressing at the council session she spoke of choosing a new leadership and how happy she would be to see a new face.

In an impromptu reaction, Sheikh Hasina asked her party men to be prepared for the next general election in a free and fair manner.

“We don’t want to hold any questionable election. We will have to visit door to door to make the election successful,” Hasina said in her concluding speech in the council.

Meanwhile, former general secretary Syed Ashraf proposed Obaidul Quader’s name as his successor. Jahangir Kabir Nanak endorsed the proposal leading to end of speculations surrounding this post.

AL CENTRAL WORKING COMMITTEE EXPANDED

Ruling Awami League has endorsed its amended constitution at the second day of its 20th council, expanding its central working committee by nine more posts.

Abdur Razzak, chairman of the AL’s constitution committee, proposed the amendments which were unanimously passed at the closed door session at Engineers’ Institute.

Sheikh Hasina, president of the Awami League’s previous central committee and the running prime minister of Bangladesh, was present at the session held this afternoon.

According to the amendment, four more posts for presidium members, one for joint secretary, one for organising secretary and two for general members have been created to make 81 posts.
